POSTURE CLINIC - Back bends andforward bends

13-August 2011 (11am - 3pm)

14 August 2011 (9am – 1pm)

According to classical Hatha Yoga, backbends invigorates whilst forward bends restores. Physiologically, when the bodyis in a back bending position, the muscles in the chest and abdominal regionsstretch whilst the muscles of the back take on the role of flexing andsupporting the body weight. The thymus is squeezed and then relaxed, activatingimmune function. Apart from the immune system, the nervous and digestivesystems of the body are also activated in this group of yogasana.

Forward bends is all about the elongation ofthe spine. It encourages full exhalation to cleanse the respiratory system, thereby introducing calmness to the mind and relaxation to the body.Anatomically, forward bends also lengthen the hamstrings and muscles of thelegs. But its main benefit is reducing the compression of the spine, givingmany muscles, organs and nerves a respite from the heavy work imposed on themby gravity.

At this Posture Clinic, you will learn thebiomechanics and architecture of back bends and forward bends. Additionally, you will enjoy vinyasa flow that will introduce you to back bends andforward bends in action as well as enjoy the benefits of these two groups of vinyasa:

Backbend vinyasa: the invigorating effect of releasing adrenaline, activating theimmune system and the cleansing action of squeezing the kidney and adrenalglands.

Forward bend vinyasa: the relaxing effect of decompressing tension in the back and therestorative benefits of massage (squeeze and release) of the abdominal organsincluding the liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines.

POSTURE CLINIC -Twists, Balances & Inversions

20-August 2011 (11am- 3pm)

21 August 2011 (9am –1pm)

According toclassical Hatha Yoga, there are specific therapeutic benefits associated witheach specific set of yogasana. Twists, which involves the squeezingand releasing of the organs of digestion, is detoxifying - its actions are akinto squeezing water out of a dirty rag (ie getting rid of toxins and metabolicby-products) and rehydrating with cleaner fluids (fresh blood rich in oxygenand nutrients). Apart from the detoxification effects, the yogasanaassociated with twists also take the spine through its range of motion, maintaining the flexibility and fluidity of the spinal column, working fromshoulders to the hip.

Arm balances requireupper body strength and flexibility. For most women, this set of yogasanais the main challenge, yet arm balances (through weight-bearing) is a provenprotection against osteoporosis. They also strengthen balance reflexes and helpto prevent falls. Appearance-wise, toned upper arms reduce the likelihood ofdeveloping unsightly bingo wings.

Inversions is aboutbalance and strength, the culmination of many physical aspects of yogasana. These poses are about changing the natural order of things, lettinggravity into new avenues of your body whilst giving traditional 'workhorse'elements of the body such as the spine a break. It also gives you a newperspective of the world and get over your fear of falling.

At this Posture Clinic, you will learn the biomechanics and architecture of twists, arm balances and inversions.Additionally, you will enjoyvinyasa flow that will introduce you toback bends and forward bends in action as well as enjoy the benefits of threegroups of vinyasa:

Twist vinyasa: the cleansing of the body and ultimately the mind, this detoxifying vinyasa gives you the opportunity to spring-clean yourbody and kick-start your kriya yoga (precursor to yoga practice, as instructedby Sri Patanjali)

Balance vinyasa: this hard-work vinyasawill awaken your arms and subtler nuances of your body as it learns thefine art of micro self-adjustments

Inversions vinyasa: challenging andinvigorating, this sequence gives your practice of yoga the opportunity to flyas well as draining fluids from your lower extremity and giving yourhard-working lower spine the much-deserved freedom. This set of yogasanapositively impacts the lymphatic, circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems ofthe body.

Little Yogis

Little Yogis in Dolphin pose. They were so good and learn to be still and in the present. During Savasana, I read them a little story about The Twelve Princesses. When they came out of Savasana, I asked them what is the story about. All 3 of them replied in unison 'I don't know!' :) After asking more, they were able to to tell me so they were listening. Yay!
